Methi Seeds For Weight Loss: Does It Work?

By | April 8, 2020

Weight loss is a complicated journey, replete with highs and lows marked by several decisions and plans adopted along the way. There are plenty of weight loss ingredients to incorporate in the weight loss diet, especially the common household herb called fenugreek seeds or methi dana.

Fenugreek is a plant native to the Mediterranean region, which is around 3 feet tall. From time immemorial, fenugreek has been employed in alternative medicine to treat ailments and is available today in supplement form. The powdered and seed versions are used commonly in the Indian kitchen. It is also considered an ayurvedic superfood for weight loss.

Fenugreek seeds are especially good for diabetics because they are loaded with fiber, which slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, particularly soluble fiber.

Experts believe that insulin activity benefits from consuming methi seeds since it is called an important factor in reducing weight loss and obesity in Hindi. Though not proven, methi seeds are said to reduce belly fat as well.

The component found in methi dana that activates weight loss is the water-soluble heteropolysaccharide called Galactomannan. It is known to reduce appetite and make one feel fuller,

thus suppressing hunger pangs. In this manner, methi seeds aid metabolism and digestion, both important factors to lose and maintain a healthy weight. Ayurveda doctor Ashutosh Gautam told NDTV that methi generates heat,

which leads to perspiration and excretion, and therefore weight loss. He recommended consuming tea made from methi seeds before going to sleep, so that the ingredient can work its way and bring about the required change.

However, research has not yet proven that methi seeds facilitate weight loss. Fenugreek seed extract in a supplement of 392 mg was given to overweight men three times every day for a period of two to six weeks.

This hypothesis held true for reducing fat intake, but not weight loss per se. High and low dose of the seeds extract does not have any impact on weight and appetite, as per the study.
