Free Choice Marriage Advantages and Disadvantages

Until modern times, marriage was rarely a matter of free choice. In western civilization love has come to be associated with marriage. However, romantic love has not been a primary motive for matrimony in most areas and the person whom it is considered permissible to marry has historically been carefully regulated by most societies.

Free choice marriage otherwise known love marriage has become a common feature of the present day society. It is brought about by the mutual love and consent of the bride and the groom. In this type of marriage neither the father nor any of the relations of the bride have any role to play. In most cases it is a marriage between the group of people belonging to different race, nationality religion, caste etc. It may be accepted by the family member but sometimes it may not.

Advantages:

(1) The question of dowry does not arise in case of free choice marriage because neither parents nor any middle man come into picture here as they choose their partner themselves.

(2) Initially it is easier to adjust between partner because before marriage they are well acquainted with the personality and behaviour of each other. They have to be more satisfied and ready to adjust in all circumstances as it is a challenge for them.

(3) Since they have decided to marry on their own without taking any body’s consent, they manage their own affairs and do not pose to be burden on others. They do not blame others for any problem faced by them.

(4) They plan their family in a better way having one or two children at best in the absence of any family support.

(5) There is less liability and less family responsibility as they live according to their own will and in most cases separately.
