This is part 2 of the blog post which is about stories from the life of Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra). He is a very elevated Saint of the Chishti Order and he was the disciple of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Ajmeri (ra) aka Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (ra).
The next story tells us how the glance of a Saint can change the life of a person regardless of his virtues or vices. Although Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) hadn’t been granted Khilafat or succession till much later on the spiritual path, Allah was pleased with him and gave him a high spiritual station early on. Once he was traveling with one of his disciples, Hazrat Hameeduddin Nagwari. While on the journey, the disciple felt hungry.
Suddenly a goat appeared in front of them carrying two loaves of bread. Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) said to his disciple to eat them both as he never ate and the wooden kaki (Roti in Russian because he was of a Russian descent) tied to his stomach kept him satiated. But the disciple insisted stating that since two loaves had been sent, then one must be for the master. So they ate them together.
After finishing the meal, they continued on their journey. Soon a river appeared in front of them. Before they could enter, Hazrat Hameeduddin Nagwari saw a scorpion nearby. He decided to kill it to clear the path for his master but Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) instructed him to let it go. The scorpion crawled into the river and disappeared. While the disciple was still wondering of ways to cross the river,
Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) dipped his finger into the river and made a prayer to Allah for creating a path for them to pass. Moments later, the river started to dry up and a path was created. Both men crossed over and the water filled up behind them. Once on the other side, nearby under a tree they saw a man sleeping. A large snake was sat close by ready to attack this man. The disciple asked the master what they could do to protect this man. Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) replied ‘Lets wait and see’.
Before the snake could attack, the same scorpion which was let free by them, appeared and bit the snake, killing it. The scorpion disappeared back into the water. Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) said to his disciple ‘Did you see how Allah creates ways for his people’. As they approached the sleeping man, they could smell alcohol on him. Hazrat Hameeduddin Nagwari woke him up and asked him
‘Do you know what has just happened?’ Upon replying in the negative, he went on to tell him that his life had just been saved from a snake by a scorpion. The man started to weep. He said to Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) ‘I am such a sinful person. I am an alcoholic. Every time I commit a sin, I repent but then I go back and repeat it again. I wonder why Allah protected me. Perhaps he liked me’.
Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) replied ‘You are an alcoholic but Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki is not. When the glance of a Saint befalls someone, then Allah sees through that glance and that person is blessed due to the elevated level of the friend of Allah, the Saint. When Allah wants to save someone, He lets the glance of a Saint fall upon that person. As He then continues to bless that person,
He brings forth endless blessings from his attributes of Rahman (Compassionate) and Raheem (Merciful) till a time comes when that person is raised to a high spiritual station himself. You have been saved but now you are free to go do what you want’. Upon hearing this, the man fell at Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki’s (ra) feet and begged him to keep him close. This man was subsequently blessed with spirituality. He went on to bless 72,000 people with the faiz (Blessings) of the Chishti order and his shrine is near the shrine of Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki (ra) in Dehli.
