For interior design aficionados, recommerce site Previously Owned by a Gay Man discovers one-of-a-kind used furnishings—in fact, previously owned by people of all sexual persuasions—and ensures these prized possessions find the right homes. The co-founder of Previously Owned by a Gay Man, Michele Hofherr, is married to MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER co-founder,
Matt Hofherr, and they shared a natural interest in working together. The agency’s comedic short film plays off the furnishing company’s tongue-in-cheek name. In “Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You,” a young man comes out to his parents,
not about being gay, but about buying his furniture on Previously Owned by a Gay Man’s website. The dialogue-heavy film made it critical to play to each actor’s strengths: the father’s confusion, the mother’s empathy and the son’s newfound comfort in who he really is.
Also, it was shot at a MUH-TAY-ZIK | HOF-FER employee’s apartment using a lot of personal affects in addition to Previously Owned by a Gay Man’s inventory. Thanks to the short, the furnishing site has piqued interest from investors and designers, including a partnership with San Francisco interior designer Geoffrey De Sousa.
