Nwoye’s character traits are that he is sensitive and thoughtful. These traits are a contrast to the social constructs for men in his culture who are expected to be tough and productive. This dichotomy leads to his estrangement from his father Okonkwo.
What is Nwoye’s story?
Nwoye is a thoughtful, sensitive boy who is not cut out for manual labor. This angers his strict and abusive father, Okonkwo. Nwoye toughens up thanks to Ikemefuna’s influence but when Okonkwo sacrifices Ikemefuna, Nwoye is never the same.
Okonkwo does not like or trust the Christian missionaries that arrive, but Nwoye connects with Christianity’s hymns which leads to his conversion. Okonkwo then disowns Nwoye for good and Nwoye leaves the village.

Nwoye symbolizes both change and Christianity. Growing up Nwoye is timid and weak but also sensitive and caring. He changes when he realizes the right way to be courageous is by following his calling to Christianity. He becomes bolder and converts to Christianity because he has always embodied its values.
What is Nwoye afraid of?
Nwoye is afraid of his abusive father Okonkwo. Nwoye cannot bring himself to tell his father what he feels and what he prefers because he is afraid his father will beat him. Okonkwo beats his son whenever Nwoye makes a mistake or acts effeminately.
