The Reward of Performing Ablution In Winter

Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Should I not inform you of that with which Allah Ta’ala wipes out sins and with which He raises ranks?” The Sahaabah Radiallahu Anhum replied: “Certainly, O Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam!” Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Performing a complete Wudhu despite difficulties; taking many steps to the Masjid; waiting for the next Salaah immediately after the present Salaah. That is real Ribaat! That is real Ribaat!” (Muslim)

Allama Dimyaati Rahimahullah says: The word ‘difficulties’ in this context refers to severe cold, illness which disables a person from moving easily, or other situations wherein it is difficult for a person to perform Wudhu. Since the person who is regular in performing the aforementioned deeds expects forgiveness for his sins, an increase in his good deeds and admission into Paradise, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam compared him to a person guarding the Islamic border (Ribaat), expecting martyrdom and forgiveness. Others are of the opinion that the aforementioned good deeds are named Ribaat because they bind a person and prevent him from committing sins and acts of disobedience. Allah Ta’ala knows best!

Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Performing a complete Wudhu despite difficulties, taking many steps to the Masjid, and waiting for the next Salaah immediately after the present Salaah, are acts that completely wash off sins.” (Al-Haithami)

Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Whoever performs a complete Wudhu in severe cold, shall receive a double reward.” (Al-Haithami)

The reward of performing ablution in winter

In conclusion, generally one finds its it difficult to perform Wudhu during the months of winter, particularly if hot water is not easily available and one is required to remove one’s warm clothing. If a person performs a perfect Wudhu ensuring that all the limbs are washed thoroughly (in accordance to the Sunnah) despite experiencing the cold weather, then there is hope that one will receive the reward of guarding the Muslim borders. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the ability to always perform a perfect and complete Wudhu. Ameen!
